While some people may be more injury prone than others, there are 10 common ways that often cause back pain or back injuries.

1. Driving

If you spend a lot of time in the car (in a sitting position) then your body may start to feel pain after sitting in the same position for a long time. Consider a driving pillow or stopping to take breaks!

2. Sleeping

Stomach sleepers and those who sleep in poor positions often experience pain due to extra pressure on their spine. For less pain, it’s best to sleep on your side or on your back.

3. Playing a Sport

From golf to pick up basketball, if you engage in an activity without stretching or warming up, your back can experience stress and pressure that it’s not used to. Warming up and stretching your body before activity can allow your muscles time to adjust to a new activity.

4. Lifting a Heavy Object

Most people pick something up without thinking about it. Whether it’s picking up a box or perhaps a grandkid, your back can take a lot of pressure if bending over too much while lifting. Truthfully, the best thing you can do is use more of your knees and bend your legs before bending your back over when lifting.

5. Sitting at a Desk

Similar to driving, sitting at a desk for along period of time can cause chronic back pain. Sitting up straight, taking breaks, and standing can significantly help your posture and eliminate back pain.

6. Cleaning and Laundry

Although it’s minor, bending over to put clothes in the washer or dryer repeatedly can significantly ad stress and strain to your back over time. The best thing you can do is perhaps get on your knees or lift with your legs more than your back.

7. Lawncare and Outdoor Chores

If you’re using a riding lawn mower, then this probably isn’t much of an issue for you. But pushing a mower can lead to problems due to the hunched over posture required to push the mower forward and pull it back. Raking leaves or even pulling weeds can also contribute to stress on your back when bending over.

8. Carrying Groceries

Sometimes it’s the little things that cause the most trouble. Maybe it’s grabbing too many bags at once when trying to bring the groceries in. Or perhaps it’s carrying a heavy bag or purse. Always be aware of what you’re carrying and make an extra trip from the car to the kitchen if needed to eliminate stress on your back.

9. Text Neck

Staring down at your phone for a long extended period of time can cause “Text Neck.” The more that you look down, the more pressure builds on your neck and back due to the weight of your head. This can lead to severe pain and chronic issues. It’s best when looking at your phone to look straight ahead holding your phone higher and not looking straight down.

10. Diet

Did you know that your diet can contribute to the pain in your body? Some foods can cause increased inflammation and the body’s ability to deal with pain and stress. A better diet can decrease inflammation in the lower back region and help to fight against stiffness and pain.
